It is a wood with a high density of 0.67 to 0,82 g/cm3, relatively high hardness and dimensional stability if properly dried. It has excellent resistance to time, wood-eating insects and fungi.

Machining is difficult with machines and hand tools. The gluing process is also difficult. Painting and finishing are trouble-free and give excellent results.

The Afzelia tree is also called the Mahogany of Africa. Unfortunately, its cultivation in plantations is limited and the species is considered endangered.

Some species of Afzelia have medicinal uses because its leaves, bark and wood contain valuable extracts. The complex chemical compound Afzelin which is a pigment belonging to the flavanols, is contained in the extracts of the species.

Its seeds are red and black and are used as beads.
